Communication Specialists Company has been providing mission-critical communications to southeastern North Carolina since 1954. The company was founded in Wilmington, NC, as M & W Electronics by Frank McNeill and Sid Withers. M & W Electronics was renamed to Communication Specialists after Sid left the company in 1956.
In 1959, the company's first branch office opened in Jacksonville, NC, primarily servicing radio equipment at Camp LeJeune Marine Corps Base.
In 1971, Communication Specialists opened its second branch office in Raleigh, NC providing mobile radio sales and service, community repeaters and trunked radio for the Triangle Area.
In 1976, Communication Specialists became the first company to offer radio paging services to customers in the Greater Wilmington area. Later in 1976, Communication Specialists formed a partnership with retired Marine Jim Hamilton, offering mobile radio and paging services to businesses and individuals in the Jacksonville / Onslow County area.
In 1996, Communication Specialists President Frank McNeill founded Beacon Communications. Beacon Communications owns and operates 7 radio towers in Wilmington, Jacksonville and Raleigh. Beacon leases tower space to more than a 20 national and international wireless communications carriers.
In 1999, Wilmington Communications, Inc., a 17-year independent two-way radio dealer, merged with Communication Specialists - bringing founder, Michael Savage, and his whole staff onboard. Also in 1999, Communication Specialists purchased CorpNet Technologies, Inc., a Wilmington-based Internet Services Provider (ISP), and began offering dial-up Internet and Web Site hosting services.
In 2001, Communication Specialists acquired QSON.net, another ISP and began branding its high-speed Internet services as Comspeco.net. We established one the area's first point-to-point high-speed wireless Internet links to connect Carolina Beach to our NOC in Wilmington, and establish Comspeco.net as a leading Wireless Internet Provider (WISP).
By 2004, the Communication Specialists Internet Services Division, Comspeco.net had expanded its services to include high-speed DSL and Wireless Internet services, Web site design and hosting, Internet Hotspot and wireless LAN.
In 2005, our designers and programmers launched BroadSail Online, a proprietary, automated, pay-as-you-go billing portal allowing anyone within range of our wireless signal to purchase, in real-time via ecommerce, high-speed wireless Internet in 1 hour, 1 day, 3 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 month and 6 month intervals.
In 2007, Comspeco.net began franchising its BroadSail Online billing portal to other ISPs. One of our franchisees, Surfmasters, Inc. contracted with Comspeco.net to provide the backhaul for a 20 node wireless hotspot infrastructure across Wrightsville Beach and Harbor Island. Comspeco.net also added Delmarva WiFi as a franchisee, extending the BroadSail Online billing portal to parts of Maryland and Delaware.
By 2008, Comspeco.net had established a network of Internet hotspots on Pleasure Island and within the Town of Topsail Beach, NC.
In 2009, Comspeco.net purchased the Wrightsville Beach wireless infrastructure formerly known as SurfMasters and is the area's #1 wireless Internet service provider, or WISP, serving thousands of customers in Topsail, Wrightsville and Carolina Beaches, as well as in Wilmington, Leland and beyond.
